PLDT looks to expand Facebook partnership

PHILIPPINE Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) said it is exploring other areas of collaboration with Facebook, Inc., following a string of meetings with Silicon Valley executives as the local telco shifts to a primarily digital company.

PLDT Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Manuel V. Pangilinan met with Facebook founder and Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg at the Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California on March 28 to discuss ways of increasing Internet adoption among Filipinos, PLDT said in a statement on Monday.

Through a strategic partnership with Facebook, PLDT?s mobile arm Smart Communications, Inc. became the first telco in Southeast Asia to roll out Free Basics, allowing two-thirds of the world?s population without Internet connection to access the social network and online services such as education, health care, and employment listings from their phones without incurring data charges.
