Dominguez wants BIR, Customs to focus on these 5 hot smuggling items

The next Mighty Corp. could be coming from these companies.

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Bureau of Customs should zoom in on catching smugglers of rice, fuel, steel, cigarettes and other food items, which he identified as the top items of “big-time smugglers” in the Philippines.

Dominguez said cigarette smuggling would be rampant again, following the government’s crackdown on Mighty Corp. which sent the company under a Japanese owner in order to afford the P25-billion settlement for using fake tax stamps. This led to the exit of their cheaper-than-usual cigarettes off the market, thus opening the search for an alternative with rock-bottom prices per stick.

In fact, the Cabinet official ordered the two agencies to create a joint task force to chase smugglers, including those bringing in chicken, onions, and garlic.

The search is on!
