Going strong since 1950s! Duterte proud of being long-time BFFs with Aboitizes

Of all the bilyonaryos in the Philippines, perhaps the family which President Rodrigo Duterte has the longest relationship with are the Aboitizes, as he himself revealed on Thursday (May 31).

Duterte heaped praises on the wealthy Cebuano clan during the inauguration of Aboitiz Power Corp.’s 420-megawatt power plant in Pagbilao, Quezon.

“Suki ako ng Aboitiz Power since 1950. That was the time when? Well, I was very young then to realize but I used to remember every time there?s a change of an equipment o pinapatay ?yung isa tapos pinapaandar naman ?yung — they had to, they had a power plant sa Davao, the very first,” he recalled.

Duterte said Davao City is a also a “suki” of the Aboitizes, and he credited the family for helping institute the 911 emergency hotline in his hometown.

“One of the Aboitiz guys is now — is one of my best friends. Aboitiz really was responsible for the 911 of Davao. And it?s a very beautiful one,” he said.

Thanks to the 911 hotline, Duterte said the local government of Davao City has been able to maintain peace and order, as well as swiftly solve crimes.

Acknowledging his long relationship with the Aboitizes, Duterte said he purposely made time to grace the inauguration of the Pagbilao power plant.

“I reserved this half day for you to be here because alam mo suki ako ng Aboitiz,” he said.

The President praised the Aboitiz family for expanding its business beyond power and Davao City.

“We appreciate the Aboitiz family for their patriotism. Mga Bisaya ?to, mga Bisaya ?to sila na mga tisoy. Mga Espa?ol. Hindi sila ?yung kalaban ko. ?Yung Amerikano ang ayaw ko,” he said.
