Duterte cancels Landing casino project on its groundbreaking day
The happy occasion turned heartbreaking in a jiffy.
Tuesday, Aug. 7 was supposed to be a momentous day for the Hong Kong-based Landing International Development Ltd., as they were to break ground and start the construction of their $1.5-billion integrated casino project in Manila.
But all hell broke loose after Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque announced in the same afternoon that President Rodrigo Duterte has cancelled the project.
As a grand gesture, Duterte has also sacked the entire board of the Nayong Pilipino Foundation for having approved a land lease deal with Landing that was “grossly disadvantageous” to the government.
Landing’s plan involves building hotels, a convention center, water parks and gambling areas by 2022.
