Jon Ramon Aboitiz passes away at 70

After reportedly a long standing battle with cancer, the patriarch of the Cebu-based Aboitiz clan, Jon Ramon Aboitiz passed away this morning at the age of 70.

Widely known as JRA by the Aboitiz Group of Companies employees, the chairman of Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. was one of the key business figures in the country over the past decades. He was responsible for growing AEV into a listed conglomerate with various interests in power, banking, real estate and food.

Jon Ramon will always be remembered as a caring and kind individual. He began his career with the Aboitiz Group in 1970 and became president of Aboitiz & Co. in 1991 until 2008.

He was president and CEO of AEV from 1993-2008 and held various positions in the Aboitiz Group.

The Spanish-Filipino businessman attributed the group’s success to loyalty and effective succession planning.

“I think that succession is very important in a family [business]. First of all, the most important in a family corporation is that you have to build up rules and regulations for the family and the business. We have, for example, built a constitution. We have a family council. We have rules of engagement, who can join the family [business] because not every family member is entitled to work for the company. He has to try; he has to go through different processes,” he earlier said in an interview with The Manila Standard.
