PLDT’s wireless business sustains growth
Telco giant PLDT Inc. said its wireless consumer business continued its upward trajectory in the first two months.
PLDT chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan, however, didn’t give other details, merely saying mobile phone subsidiaries Smart and TNT reported growth in revenues and the number of their subscribers.
Revenues from the wireless business went up seven percent to P62.5 billion.Mobile data usage on Smart’s network had more than doubled to over 820 Petabytes last year.
Mobile data revenues jumped 62 percent to P37.6 billion, accounting for 60% of the wireless consumer group’s revenues.
“Online video viewing—YouTube in the case of mobile, and video on demand for the fixed line—was the compelling offer that powered the strong adoption of our fixed and mobile data services,” said Ernesto R. Alberto, PLDT and Smart executive vice president and chief revenue officer.
As of the end of 2018, the coverage of PLDT’s fiber-powered network passed 6.3 million homes, while total capacity reached 2.6 million ports.
Smart also increased the number of its LTE base stations by over 86 percent year-on-year to about 16,200 while the number of 3G base stations on its network also went up by 17 percent to about 11,500.
This massive deployment has enabled Smart to provide mobile broadband in at least 90 percent of the country’s cities and municipalities.
