PLDT offers free 911 calls, prank callers face jail time
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced Thursday that subscribers of PLDT, Smart, Talk N’ Text and Sun could now call the government’s emergency hotline for free.
“Huwag po kayong magdalawang-isip na i-dial ang 911 sa panahon ng emergency. We will not let the lack of mobile credit get in the way of saving lives as every second is important during emergency situations,” DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said.
He, however, warned that prank callers could face imprisonment of not more than five years or a fine of not more than P40,000 at the discretion of the court.
According to the DILG, 15% of the called made during the first six months of the year were either fraudulent or hoax.
