Nograles questions Chinese POGO motive: Why go to undeveloped islands, military zones when there are ready-built ecozones?
PBA party-list Rep. Jericho Nograles is questioning why
Chinese-backed Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) want to
build in key security areas in the country when there are dozens of
ready-built economic zones in the country.
Nograles cited the plan of Chinese investors to develop three
strategic islands —Fuga in Cagayan Province and adjacent Grande and
Chiquita Islands in Subic Bay, Zambales province – into economic hubs.
“Grande Island is right at the mouth of Subic Bay…it is not
developed It makes you wonder why you would want to develop that area
into a POGO?” said Nograles in an interview with CNN Philippines’ Pinky Webb.
“It’s a huge development for POGos in that area when they can develop
elsewhere, when there are other PEZA (Philippine Economic Zone
Authority) zones for that,” he added.
Senator Risa Hontiveros was baffled by the government would green
light these projects despite China’s aggressive behavior in the West
“These are no ordinary islands. These parcels of land are strategic
maritime fronts that play a significant role in our military history,
which only proves how invaluable they are to our national security,”
